Gait: A New Image, Model and Experience

November 16 - 18, 2012
UC Health Drake Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

LEARNING THEME AND OBJECTIVES

Ground Reaction Forces: The Interdependent Relationship of Pressure and Alignment

How 3-D Pelvic Rotation Frees the Rear Foot and Organizes the Forward Leg
Discovering the Vertical Power Line of the Heel (VPLH)
Lower Rib Availability Leads to Freedom

  • Identify the key elements that comprise the Integral Human Gait model.
  • Articulate how horizontal rotation of the pelvis frees the foot in the rear and organizes the forward leg in the single leg stance phase of gait.
  • Differentiate how the lumbar spine accepts a position of neutrality during both the swing and stance phase of gait.
  • Perform a movement process to align the hip, knee or ankle.
  • Experience a personal appreciation of how a vibrant gait contributes to well-being.
  • Perform one movement process using the Gluteals and/or Hip Adductors to re-orientate midline trunk awareness

The Re-organizing Power of Counter-Rotation

How Pelvic Rotation Cascades Upward
Interrupting Motor Pattern Habits
Preparing the Trunk to Receive Ground Reactions Forces

  • Organize the head, shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle in a rotation/counter rotation movement pattern.
  • Distinguish how rib mobility plays a key role during both the swing and stance phase of gait.
  • Perform a movement processes to align the hip, knee or ankle.
  • Discover the value and role that rhythm plays in contributing to a smooth and efficient gait pattern.
  • Understand the optimal Multi-Dimensional rotary patterns of walking.
  • Experience a personal appreciation of how a vibrant gait contributes to well-being.
  • Demonstrate three ways to align the C7 vertebrae over the forward leg in the single leg stance phase of gait.

Direct Application of Gait: A New Image, Model and Experience

  • Observe a current client case and evaluate the kinetic chain for the most effective entry point of change for enhanced freedom and ease of movement in walking.
  • Comprehend the requirements needed to complete and submit a written case study for additional continuing education units.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Major themes are:

Ground Reaction Forces: The Interdependent Relationship of Pressure and Alignment

The Re-organizing Power of Counter-Rotation

Direct Application in Rehabilitation

Walking, more than just a functional outcome, can be an unsurpassed quality of life assessment tool. This course advances beyond the traditional study of characteristics found in the stance and swing phases of gait. Using Integral Human Gait Theory™, we explore a comprehensive map that far exceeds the current understanding in physical medicine, rehabilitation and sport training. At the heart of the human experience, the “how” of walking shapes physical comfort, security, emotional well-being and happiness.

Using the sensory learning platforms, we discover the functional relationship between peripheral and spinal joints and their unique movement patterns. We will study the interplay of pressure and alignment through ground reaction forces to answer these questions: What impact does gait have on neck, shoulder and upper/lower back health? Why is gait so important in human health and relieving chronic pain patterns? Why is walking is beneficial only if it is balanced? In what ways does gait resonate with the rhythms of the body?
